Though there are similarities, a few tell-tale characteristics give the Min Pin away. The hackney gait that is sought after in American Min Pins is actually considered a fault in its native Germany, although in this country it is a good indication that you are dealing with a purebred Min Pin. The German FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) also places the Min Pin in the second class to compete against larger dogs, while the AKC classifies it as a toy dog, along with Chihuahuas and Pomeranians.

Once you begin breeding the Min Pin with other small breeds, the results can be unpredictable. Research the characteristics of each breed and understand that the resulting mix could encompass any of the traits of either breed.

A common mix is the Chipin or Chin-pin, a Chihuahua/Min Pin cross. Many owners comment that this cross breed has a more pleasant demeanor than the typical Chihuahua, with a higher tolerance for children and less nipping.

Another common mix is the Rat-a-Pin, a cross between the Rat Terrier and the Min Pin. This hybrid cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club, though it may not be a perfect 50/50 mix. Many breeders use multi-generational crosses.

In short, it can be difficult to predict the outcome when cross breeding Min Pins and one may have so many telling Min Pin characteristics that you may even believe it is a purebred. However, without the true coloring, proper height, tell tale gait and other distinguishing characteristics you may not have a purebred on your hands.
