The
Doggy Door’s Role in Training
Your Miniature Pinscher
Why is the doggy door so great? It allows your Min Pin the freedom to wander
out and do his business whenever he would like.
That’s a good thing, right? Well, only if you have a fenced in area on the
other side of that doggy door. The doggy
door should not be an escape hatch for your dog to wander the neighborhood unsupervised. It’s also not a substitute for walking as
exercise. I think that the doggy door
buys him a bit of freedom but that the odd owner might take that freedom a
little too far. Personally, I believe that the doggy door should
be introduced AFTER the Min Pin has been trained to do their business
outside. It is important for you to be
as involved as possible during housebreaking, but how can you reward and praise
your puppy for peeing outside when you’re in sitting on the couch when they do
it? By teaching them to go outside
first, you are spending that valuable time with them teaching them where to go
and encouraging them for their good behavior.
Once you decide to use the doggy door, watch for
your dog’s cues and set them in front of the door. Gently give them a push out. Be waiting with
a treat each time they come back in… after peeing! Watch to be sure they’re actually going pee
when they’re out and not just hounding for treats.
